How to Find a Trustworthy DayZ Group in 2026

Official or community server, PvP or PvE, first or third person: how to pick a DayZ server and vet a group before you trust them with your gear.

The safest way to find a trustworthy DayZ group is to pick the server first, then the people: agree on an official or community server, on first person only or first and third person, and on PvP or PvE rules, then test a new group with a low-stakes session before you share a base, a car or a stash. DayZ has no built-in group finder, up to 60 players share a server according to Bohemia's Steam page, and a character that dies is gone, so who you trust matters more here than in most games.

We checked Bohemia's Steam announcements, the Steam store listing and the community-run DayZ wiki on November 2, 2026. Anything we could not confirm from a primary source is labelled or left out.

Official or community servers

DayZ servers fall into two families. According to the DayZ wiki, official servers are owned and run by Bohemia Interactive and aim at the vanilla experience, without mods or heavy changes to the loot economy. Community servers are player-owned, and each uses its own separate database, so an admin can change rules, loot, mods and even wipe schedules.

What that means for finding a group:

  • Official servers suit people who want a stable baseline and do not want to learn a rule set. A new group is mostly strangers, so vetting matters more than anything else.
  • Community servers suit people who want a specific style: PvE only, roleplay, hardcore PvP, a particular map or mods. They often have regulars, Discord servers and written rules, which makes a trustworthy group easier to find and to report when it misbehaves.

The in-game server browser has separate Official and Community tabs, plus Favorites, Recent and Friends tabs. The Friends tab shows servers where people from your friends list are already playing. Per the wiki, you can filter by third person, ping, password, whitelist and BattlEye protection, and official servers are required to run BattlEye anti-cheat. Many community servers do too, and it is worth filtering for it.

One practical detail from the wiki: characters on official servers are shared across the official servers, and 1PP and 3PP servers keep separate characters. Community servers do not share characters with official ones.

First person or third person servers

Servers either force first person only (1PP) or allow both views (1PP/3PP). Per the wiki, servers that allow third person show a person icon in the browser.

This is not cosmetic: third person lets you see around corners, which many players count as an advantage in a fight. Settle it in the first conversation, and join first person only servers if you want fights decided by what you can actually see.

PvP, PvE and the middle ground

DayZ is a PvP-capable sandbox: Bohemia describes other survivors as an obstacle, a helping hand or a threat, and you decide. Official servers run the vanilla experience, so if you want a server with PvE rules you need a community server that advertises them, and you should read its rules before you join.

Ask the group which style it wants: hardcore PvP (shoot on sight, contested loot), survival with negotiation (talk first), or PvE and cooperation. A group that cannot answer in one sentence will argue about it mid-firefight.

Platforms and crossplay

DayZ is sold on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation, and the 1.30 Badlands patch was released across all three. Plan your group around one platform.

We could not open Bohemia's own FAQ from our network, and none of the Steam announcements we read for 2026 mentions crossplay, so we make no claim either way. Before you recruit a mixed group, check the FAQ at dayz.com and test that everyone can join the same server.

Badlands: where the expansion stands

As of November 2, 2026, DayZ Badlands is out. Bohemia announced the release on October 15, 2026 together with Update 1.30. The expansion adds Nasdara, a desert map where heat and sandstorms bring new medical problems, nearly 5,000 rebuildable structures, wells you can restore and motorbikes. Update 1.30 also meant a full wipe across all platforms.

Bohemia reported more than 325,500 Badlands units bought across all platforms in its first week and a peak of more than 435,500 concurrent players during the launch period. Its October 28 post announced a hotfix for crashes, going to Experimental first and then Stable, followed by a second patch, so expect servers to keep changing. Badlands is paid DLC ($24.99 on Steam in the US): confirm everyone owns Badlands before you plan a session there.

How to vet a group before you trust it

You are not vetting skill. You are vetting behavior with shared loot. Here is a process that costs little:

  1. Talk before you spawn. Agree on the server, perspective, rule on strangers and meeting point.
  2. Check the server rules together. Community servers often ban combat logging, limit base raiding or forbid kill-on-sight in safe zones. Read them aloud.
  3. Start with a short, low-value session. Do a coast run with nothing worth stealing. Watch who shares loot, who calls out threats and who stays on voice.
  4. Hold valuables back at first. Keep keys, code locks and the full stash location to yourself until the group has earned it.
  5. Watch for red flags. Refusing voice, pushing you to share the base location on day one, blaming others for every loss, or logging off with group gear.

Finding people to play with

  • In-game: the server browser's Friends tab and the community servers' regulars. Proximity voice chat is the natural way to meet someone, and also the riskiest.
  • Server communities: most community servers run a Discord with rules, a wipe schedule and admins. Our list of the best LFG Discord servers in 2026 shows where to look.
  • Reddit and Steam groups: posts get old fast, so say your platform, region and server style.
  • GameVerse: a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, with mobile coming soon. It shows players online now for the same game and region, chill or competitive, and lets you message them, with up to 8 players per search. It does not match on rank, role or schedule and does not verify anyone, so the vetting steps above still apply. For games outside its curated catalogue, the mode is written in free text. FAQ

Is DayZ better on official or community servers?

Neither. Official servers give a vanilla baseline run by Bohemia. Community servers give variety, but each admin sets the rules, so read them first.

Does DayZ have crossplay?

We could not confirm it from Bohemia's FAQ, and its 2026 announcements do not mention crossplay. Check dayz.com/faq and test with your group before you plan around mixed platforms.

Is there a PvE server in DayZ?

Official servers are the vanilla experience. PvE rule sets are a community server matter, so look for one that states its rules clearly.

What is the difference between first person and third person servers?

First person servers lock the camera to first person. 3PP servers let you switch between views. Pick the same type as your group.

Is DayZ Badlands out?

Yes. DayZ Badlands was released on October 15, 2026 with Update 1.30, and it adds the desert map Nasdara. Bohemia's launch post says Update 1.30 included a full wipe on all platforms.

How do I know a DayZ group is trustworthy?

Talk first, agree on rules, run a low-value session and share valuables gradually.
