Nerf means a game update that makes a character, weapon, item or mechanic weaker, and buff means an update that makes it stronger. Developers use both to balance competitive and co-op games after release.
Nerfs and buffs show up in patch notes, usually as small number changes: less damage, a longer cooldown, a bigger hitbox, a lower drop rate. A single patch often nerfs some options and buffs others at the same time.
How players use it
- "They nerfed the SMG again, it is useless now."
- "Finally a buff for my main, she was unplayable last season."
- "That ability got nerfed to the ground."
- "Wait for the patch notes, half the roster is getting buffed."
Both words work as verbs and as nouns: you can say "the nerf hurt" or "they buffed it". Players also say "nerf this" or "buff that" as a complaint or request in chat and on forums. Adjusting something so it fits better, without clearly going up or down, is often called a "rework" or a "tweak" instead.
Why developers do it
Balance changes keep a game healthy over time. If one option is too strong, almost everyone picks it and the meta turns stale, so it gets a nerf. If an option is too weak and nobody uses it, it gets a buff so that more choices stay viable. Balance teams look at pick rates, win rates and player feedback, and each patch can shift which options are strongest.
Why players argue about it
- Skill levels differ. Something can feel overpowered in a casual lobby and be fine in high-level play, so players at different ranks often disagree about what needs a nerf.
- Your main is affected. If you play one character a lot, a nerf on it hits you directly. See main.
- Shifting meta. Every balance patch can change the best picks, which is why players check patch notes before a new season.
- Overcorrection. Players sometimes say a nerf was too heavy ("nerfed into the ground") and ask for a buff the next patch.
Nerfs and buffs apply to PvE games as well as PvP. In a co-op or MMO game, a nerf might make a boss easier or reduce a class's damage, which matters if you play PvE and PvP.

FAQ
What is the difference between a nerf and a buff?
A nerf lowers the power of something, a buff raises it. A nerf makes a weapon or character weaker, a buff makes it stronger.
Does a nerf always mean something was removed?
No. A nerf only weakens it. The character or weapon stays in the game, with less damage, a longer cooldown or another reduced stat.
Where can I see what was nerfed or buffed?
In the official patch notes of the game, usually posted on the developer's site or the game's launcher when each update goes live. Community sites also summarize them after big patches.
Are nerfs and buffs the same as bug fixes?
No. A bug fix corrects something that was not working as intended. A nerf or buff is a deliberate balance decision, even if the developer says a change was caused by a bug.
