Duo queue in 2026: rules and ranks

Before you queue up, know the rules. Duo queue in League of Legends is only allowed in Ranked Solo/Duo within a limited rank gap: Riot restricts pairings to players within roughly one tier of each other (a Gold player can duo with Silver or Platinum, but not with Diamond). The exact bracket can shift slightly between seasons, but the principle has been stable for years: no boosting a friend three tiers below you.

At the top of the ladder, the door closes completely: Master, Grandmaster and Challenger cannot duo in Ranked Solo/Duo at all. If you have hit Master and still want to play with a partner, Ranked Flex 5v5 is your mode: rank restrictions are much looser there, and you can also queue as a trio or a full five-stack.

Which roles should your LoL duo pick? Two pairings dominate:

Bot lane (ADC plus Support): the strongest duo synergy in the game. You share the same lane for the entire laning phase, so every trade, every ward and every all-in becomes a coordinated 2v2 instead of a coin flip with a random. A Support who knows exactly when their ADC wants to engage wins lanes on communication alone.
Jungle plus Mid: the map-control duo. Mid priority sets up jungle invades, river vision and objective control, while a jungler who paths around their mid laner turns small leads into Dragon and Herald stacks. Less lane synergy, more tempo across the whole map.

Top lane duos exist too (Top plus Jungle for dive setups), but if you want maximum impact per game, bot lane and jungle-mid are where a duo decides matches.

From Master onward, Ranked Solo/Duo becomes solo-only: Master, Grandmaster and Challenger players cannot duo there at all. High-elo duos switch to Ranked Flex 5v5, where the restrictions are far looser.

Is a bot lane duo better than other combos?

For raw lane synergy, yes: ADC plus Support share every fight from level 1, so coordination pays off immediately. Jungle plus Mid is the strongest alternative if you prefer controlling the map through invades, vision and objectives. Either way, any coordinated combo beats solo queue with an autofilled random.
