GameVerse vs PlayStation: the console that lost its group finder
PlayStation is the best-selling console of its generation, and its social layer is genuinely good once you have friends: parties, voice chat, game invites and a mobile app that keeps it all in sync. What it no longer does is help you meet teammates you do not have yet.
PS4 had Communities, where players posted recruiting messages and built squads around a game. Sony removed the feature in April 2021 and the PS5 launched without a replacement. This GameVerse vs PlayStation page explains what Game Base does and does not cover, and when a PlayStation alternative for finding players, like GameVerse, is worth adding next to your PSN account.
What PlayStation actually offers to find players
- Game Base: the PS5 social hub for friends, parties, messages and game invites, designed around people already on your list.
- Parties and voice chat: up to 16 players in a party, with screen share, solid once the squad exists.
- PlayStation App: the same friends, messages and parties on your phone.
- In-game matchmaking: fills your lobby with randoms, with no memory of who was good.
- Players Met: recent teammates you can add, the closest thing to discovery on PS5.
- Communities: the one real recruiting feature Sony shipped, removed in April 2021 with no successor.

When PlayStation is enough
If your friends list is full of people who play your games at your hours, you do not need anything else. Game Base is built for that case: one tap to party up, voice that just works.
- You mostly play with real-life friends or a squad you have had for years.
- You play cooperative games where any random teammate is fine, and you are not chasing rank.
- You are happy adding good randoms from the Players Met list after a match and building your list slowly.
When you need GameVerse instead
The gap appears the moment you want a specific teammate: a duo at your rank in a competitive title, a squad for a fixed evening slot, or simply someone who will not quit mid-match. PS5 has no place to ask for that, so players end up on Reddit or Discord, with all the spam and unverified ranks.
- You play ranked on a cross-play title and need a partner at your real rank, not a random from the lobby.
- You have a fixed schedule and want teammates who show up at the same time every week.
- You want a filter on behavior before inviting someone, instead of finding out during the match.
Using PlayStation and GameVerse together
PSN remains your platform. GameVerse only handles the search step Sony removed.
- Find the match on GameVerse: set your game, rank, role and schedule at /find-players and review the profiles returned.
- Agree on the basics in GameVerse messaging: game mode, session length, mic or not, and confirm you can cross-play if your partner is on PC or Xbox.
- Exchange PSN IDs and party up on PS5: send the friend request, open a Game Base party, and launch the game as usual.
- Keep the partner: once the duo works, it lives on your friends list like any other, and you stop searching.
Best games to find teammates for
- Fortnite: cross-play makes it the easiest title to match on any platform. Find a Fortnite duo.
- Apex Legends: trios live or die on complementary legends. Build an Apex trio.
- Call of Duty Warzone: squads need a consistent schedule more than anything. Find a Warzone trio.
- Helldivers 2: a PlayStation flagship with no group finder of its own. Build a Helldivers 2 squad.
- Marvel Rivals: tank, DPS and healer balance matters. Find a Marvel Rivals duo.
- Rocket League: ranked 2v2 is the core of the game. Find a Rocket League duo.
Frequently asked questions
Is PlayStation online play free?
Partly. Free-to-play titles such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Warzone can be played online without a subscription, but most paid games require a PlayStation Plus membership for online multiplayer. GameVerse itself is free during beta and does not change what PSN charges.
Does PS5 have an LFG or team finder?
No. Sony removed PlayStation Communities in April 2021 and PS5's Game Base covers friends, parties and messages only. There is no built-in way to search for new teammates by rank, role or schedule on PlayStation.
Can GameVerse find teammates for PS5 players?
Yes. Cross-play titles like Fortnite, Apex Legends, Warzone, Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals are supported, so PS5 players match with compatible teammates on PlayStation, PC or Xbox. You then party up through PSN as usual.
Does GameVerse sync my PSN stats?
Not directly. GameVerse syncs stats from connected Steam, Riot and Epic accounts. For console-only titles, your profile relies on the rank and role you declare, combined with the behavior score built from your sessions on GameVerse.
What replaced PlayStation Communities?
Nothing official. Sony pointed players toward parties and the PlayStation App, which only cover people you already know.
Can I still add good randoms I met in a match?
Yes, the Players Met list in Game Base shows recent teammates and lets you send a friend request. It is useful, but it is luck-based: you only meet whoever the lobby gave you, with no filter on rank, role or schedule.
Try GameVerse for free and give your PS5 the group finder Sony never rebuilt.
