How to Find People to Play Minecraft With in 2026

Java and Bedrock do not mix on Realms. Find Minecraft players with SMP servers, server lists, Realms and crossplay, plus safety tips for minors.

The first thing to settle when you look for people to play Minecraft with is the edition: Java and Bedrock players cannot join the same Realm, and most public servers are built for one edition only. Once you know which one you and your friends own, the fastest routes are a public server from a server list, a community SMP found through Discord or Reddit, or a Realm you share with people you already know.

We checked Mojang's Realms information, Minecraft help pages and server hosting documentation on November 2, 2026. Where a figure changes by region or by plan, we say so instead of quoting a number.

Java or Bedrock: pick the edition first

Java Edition is the PC version and has the biggest scene of community servers, mods and plugins. Bedrock Edition runs on PC, consoles and phones, and it is the one with real crossplay between those platforms. The official Realms page says Realms is cross-platform, but only within the same edition: Java players join Java Realms, Bedrock players join Bedrock Realms.

That has a practical consequence. If you are on PlayStation and your friend is on a PC with Java, you cannot just meet on a Realm. Either one of you buys the other edition (on PC, Minecraft is sold as a Java and Bedrock bundle, and prices vary by region and retailer), or you use a server that bridges both.

Ways to find people to play with

Realms with people you know

A Realm is a private world hosted by Mojang for a subscription. It is the simplest option for a small group: you invite people with a link, and the world stays online when you do not. The plans and the number of players allowed online at the same time differ by edition and plan, and sources disagree on details, so read the current Realms page before paying. Realms does not help you meet strangers, it is for a group that already exists.

Public servers from server lists

Server lists show public servers with a player count, the game modes they run and the version they expect. Pick a server whose edition and version match yours, then read its rules and Discord invite before joining. Look for:

  • a short, clear rules page and visible moderation,
  • a recent version and active staff, not an abandoned address,
  • a mode you actually want: survival, minigames, skyblock, creative plots, roleplay.

Large servers are good for quick games and minigames. Smaller ones make it easier to keep the same teammates.

Community SMP servers

An SMP (survival multiplayer) is a persistent shared world, usually small, where the same group builds and plays for weeks. Many SMPs are whitelisted: you apply through a form or Discord, and staff decide who joins. To find one, search Reddit and Discord for the words "SMP", "whitelist" and "applications", and filter by edition, version, age range, language and play style (vanilla, lightly modded, roleplay).

Be ready for an application: say your edition, time zone, how long you play per week and what you like to build. SMPs care about whether you will stay.

Discord and Reddit

Minecraft communities on both sites are large and active. Post the edition, version, region, time zone and what you want to do (survival, hardcore, redstone, building, minigames). Vague posts like "anyone want to play?" disappear quickly. Our guide to the best LFG Discord servers in 2026 lists places to post.

GameVerse

GameVerse is one option next to these. It is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux (mobile coming soon) that shows players online now for the same game and region, chill or competitive, and lets you message them, with up to 8 players per search. It does not match on rank, role or schedule, and for games outside its curated catalogue the mode is written in free text, so say your edition and version in that text. See the Minecraft page or browse find players.

Crossplay between Java and Bedrock

Natively, Java and Bedrock do not connect. Some servers add a bridge called Geyser, which opens a Bedrock listener (UDP 19132 by default) next to the normal Java port (TCP 25565). Bedrock players then connect to the server address and that port. By default Geyser expects Bedrock players to own a Java account, and a companion tool called Floodgate removes that requirement.

Limits to know about:

  • Bridging works best on Paper or Spigot style plugin servers.
  • Heavily modded Java servers generally do not work, because Bedrock clients cannot load Java mods.
  • Some Java mechanics and plugins can behave oddly for Bedrock players.

If a server says "Java and Bedrock supported", check its page for the Bedrock address and port rather than guessing.

What to agree on before you play

  1. Edition and version: servers are strict about both.
  2. Game style: hardcore, peaceful, vanilla survival, builders or redstone engineers.
  3. Rules about griefing and claims: many survival servers use land claims or whitelists.
  4. Voice: Minecraft has no built-in voice chat, so decide whether you use Discord, console party chat or text only.
  5. Time zone: an SMP with nobody online at your hours is a lonely world.

Safety tips for minors

Minecraft is popular with young players, and public servers are open to strangers. If you are a parent or a young player:

  • Use Microsoft Family Safety or the Xbox family settings app to control multiplayer and communication with others. Sign out of Minecraft and restart it for changes to apply.
  • Start with multiplayer and chat limited to friends, then loosen it as the player gets older. This is common advice, not an official default.
  • Prefer servers with visible rules, moderators and a report process, and avoid ones that push private chats on other apps.
  • Never share your real name, address, school, photos or passwords. Do not click links from strangers, and do not download files they send you.
  • Use the block and report tools, and check Mojang's help center for the current in-game steps.
  • Discord requires users to be at least 13 (older in some countries), so younger players should not join Minecraft Discord communities, and teens should do so with a parent's agreement.
  • Be suspicious of anyone offering free ranks, items or in-game currency in exchange for account details or a meeting on another app. Real servers never ask for your Microsoft password.
  • For a young child, a Realm with invited friends and family is the most controlled setup, because only the people you invite or give the invite link to can join. Never post that link publicly.

FAQ

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?

Not natively. Realms is limited to the same edition. Some servers use Geyser to let Bedrock players join a Java server, with the limits described above.

How do I find a Minecraft SMP?

Search Reddit and Discord for "SMP whitelist applications", filter by edition, version, region and play style, and send an application that says when you play and what you want to build.

Is Minecraft crossplay between consoles and PC?

Bedrock Edition is cross-platform across PC, consoles and phones. Java Edition is PC only.

Are Minecraft Realms worth it for friends?

For a small group that already knows each other, yes: it is private, stays online and is easy to join. It does not help you meet new players, and plans differ by edition, so check the current offer.

How do I find Minecraft friends if I play alone?

Join a public server with an active community, post in a Minecraft Discord or Reddit group with your edition and time zone, or use an app that lists players online for the game, such as GameVerse.

Is Minecraft safe for kids to play online?

It can be with the right setup: family settings to limit chat and multiplayer, moderated servers, no personal information shared, and an adult who knows which servers are used.
