The best online co-op game for your group depends mostly on group size: for two players, pick Elden Ring Nightreign or Baldur's Gate 3; for three or four, Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Monster Hunter Wilds or ARC Raiders; for five or more, Valheim, Palworld on a server or Enshrouded on PC. Crossplay is the second filter, because a group split between PC, PlayStation and Xbox can only play together in some of these games.
We checked player limits and crossplay on November 2, 2026, against publisher announcements and patch notes where we could reach them, and press coverage otherwise. Where sources disagreed, we say "not confirmed" instead of guessing. Check the in-game settings before you buy for the whole group.

Best co-op games for two players
Elden Ring Nightreign
FromSoftware's co-op roguelite is built for three, but you can pick a duo expedition in the matchmaking settings. The catch is crossplay. Guides agree there is none between PC, PlayStation and Xbox, only between console generations of the same family. Put both of you on the same platform first. See the Nightreign game page.
Baldur's Gate 3
Online co-op lets up to four players share one campaign, each with their own character, and it suits two just as well. Expect a long campaign, so agree on difficulty and classes before you start. Larian's Patch 8, released on April 15, 2025, added crossplay between PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with progression that follows you across platforms. Sea of Thieves
The ship sets your crew size: a Sloop takes two players, a Brigantine three and a Galleon four. A Sloop is a good duo format, and the four-player cap holds across platforms. Since the April 2024 PS5 release, PlayStation, Xbox and PC players can sail together; the options for limiting crossplay differ by platform, so check the matchmaking settings. Helldivers 2
Arrowhead's squad shooter is a four-player game, and it has been on Xbox Series X/S since August 26, 2025, with crossplay between PC, PS5 and Xbox. Deep Rock Galactic
Four dwarves, one mine. Crossplay is limited: Xbox and Microsoft Store PC players can mix, but the Steam version does not connect to consoles, and PlayStation players only play with other PlayStation players. Buy it on the same store as your friends. See the Deep Rock Galactic game page.
Monster Hunter Wilds
A hunt takes up to four players, and the late-game Tempered monsters reward a coordinated party. Crossplay between PC, PS5 and Xbox is reported as on by default, and you can restrict a lobby to your own platform in the settings. Cross-progression reports conflict, so do not count on it. ARC Raiders

Valheim
Valheim keeps a 10-player cap in 1.0, which Iron Gate released on September 9, 2026 for PC, Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2, and Iron Gate announced full crossplay across all of them. Palworld
Palworld left Early Access with version 1.0 on July 10, 2026. A co-op world joined by invite code holds four players, while dedicated servers hold up to 32. Crossplay between Steam, Xbox, PS5 and Mac arrived in 2025, and the server owner chooses which platforms can join. Enshrouded
Enshrouded reached 1.0 on October 15, 2026, with up to 16 players in a world on PC. Reports say the PS5 version launched without crossplay with PC and may have a lower player cap, which we could not confirm, so a mixed PC and PS5 group should not plan around one shared world yet. How to choose for your group
- Count the platforms first: if your group splits across PC and consoles, Baldur's Gate 3, Helldivers 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, ARC Raiders and Valheim are the safest bets.
- Match the commitment: Baldur's Gate 3, Valheim and Enshrouded are long projects, while Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic are easy to drop into for one evening.
- Agree on voice and difficulty: one person who wants hard mode and one who wants a chill night is the usual reason a group stops playing.
- Have a backup game: when a friend cannot make it, a flexible 2 to 4 player game keeps the session alive.
Finding people to play with
If your friends are on different schedules or do not own the game, there are several real options. In-game tools such as Helldivers 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds matchmaking fill squads quickly, but you get random teammates. Reddit and Discord LFG channels let you pick people with a description, though posts scroll away fast; our guide to the best LFG Discord servers shows where to look.
