The fastest way to find a tribe in ARK: Survival Ascended is to pick the server type first (official or unofficial, PvE or PvP), then recruit people who play that same server in your hours, and only then create the tribe in the Tribe Management menu. Tribe rules are set per server, so a tribe that suits a 10-player limit on one official cluster may not fit a different one. If you are starting from zero, aim for a handful of first tribemates rather than a huge group.
We checked the Steam store page and Steam player count, the Studio Wildcard announcements posted on Steam (up to Community Crunch 530, October 31, 2026) and the ARK wiki on November 2, 2026. Facts we could not confirm from an official source are left out.

Official or unofficial servers
Official servers are run by Studio Wildcard, with its own rules and rates, and they are where most people look first. According to the event posts on Steam, the official network has PvP, PvE and Small Tribes servers, and there are official Conquest servers, a large-scale PvP mode with boosted rates that Wildcard's posts credit to Snail Games.
Unofficial servers are run by communities or hosts. They choose their own rates, tribe size, wipe schedule and mods. That makes them the place to look for a small, friendly PvE group, but the rules are whatever the admin wrote, so read the server description before you tame anything. Mods are the other catch: if your group mixes PC and console players, confirm that everyone can load the server's mods before you settle there.
One more practical point: Wildcard announced it will sunset a list of inactive official Island servers on November 29, 2026. Those servers get a "SUNSET" prefix in their name and drop out of your in-game Favorites. Pick a server with people actually online, not just one with a familiar name, or your tribe may end up in a ghost town.
PvE or PvP
This choice decides what kind of tribemates you want, so make it before you recruit.
| Choice | Typical tribe focus | What you need from tribemates |
|---|---|---|
| PvE | Taming, building, bosses, collecting | Patience, shared goals, someone who builds |
| PvP | Raiding, defending a base, outposts | Overlapping hours so the base is never left alone |
| Small Tribes | PvP with a cap on tribe size (check the server) | A tight group that trusts each other |
The ARK wiki describes the two tribe styles the same way: PvE tribes focus on activities that do not engage other players in a hostile way, PvP tribes on attacking rival tribes and forming alliances. On PvP servers, time zones matter far more than on PvE, because a base nobody watches is a base that can be raided.
Tribe rules are set per server
Do not assume a number. We could not find one official tribe size for the whole game. What we did find on November 2, 2026:
- Wildcard's Conquest rules list a 10-player tribe limit on 1-month wipe servers and 25 on 2-month wipe servers, with formal alliances not allowed.
- The official Small Tribes servers exist as a separate type, but we did not find their exact cap in Wildcard's posts, so check the server information in game.
- Unofficial servers set their own limits.
Before you invite anyone, read the server's rules and note the cap, whether alliances are allowed and when the next wipe is.
Step by step: how to join or form a tribe
- Choose the server first. Official or unofficial, PvE or PvP, and the map. Two friends on different servers are not in the same game.
- Check platforms. Steam lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer, and Wildcard's Conquest posts say those official servers are open for PC, Xbox and PlayStation. We found no official per-mode table, so confirm that your platform can join the exact server your group picked.
- Create or join. Open your inventory and choose Tribe Management to create a tribe or leave one. To invite someone, hold the use key on a nearby survivor and hold the invite option until the timer fills; by default only tribe admins can invite, per the ARK wiki.
- Merge, do not just join, if you already have a base. The wiki warns that a solo-tribe player who only joins another tribe loses their structures and tames. Merge into the inviting tribe instead.
- Set up ranks. Tribe groups with rank numbers (0 to 9) let you keep the vault and the best tames away from new members until you trust them.
How to vet a tribe
You hand over storage, tames and a place to log out. A short checklist helps:
- Ask for the rules in writing: who owns tames and structures, who gets codes, who can demolish.
- Look at the leader's history: a few weeks on the same server beats a profile created yesterday.
- Start with a trial period: limited rank, no vault access, same tasks as everyone.
- Never share your account or personal details. Tribemates only need your in-game name.
- Watch for no-shows: a tribe that is never online when you are is the wrong tribe, however friendly.
What to agree on before you play
The ARK wiki's tribe governance section lists settings that decide what happens to your things: whether dinos are tribe owned or personally owned, whether structures belong to the tribe or to the builder, and whether pin codes and locks are shared. Talk through each one, then add the human side:
- Roles: who tames, who builds, who farms, who defends.
- Hours: when the group is online and who watches the base.
- Goal: a chill base, a boss run or a PvP push.
- Loot and tames: how you split drops and who can use the rare creatures.
- Leaving: what each member can take if they quit.
Finding people to play with
- In-game server browser: the best way to meet people already on your target server. Chat in the area near spawn and offer to team up.
- Discord: the official ARK and server-specific Discords have recruitment channels. Our guide to the best LFG Discord servers in 2026 shows where to post.
- Reddit and forums: good for recruitment posts, but replies are slow and you only see who answers.
- GameVerse: a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux (mobile coming soon). It shows players online now for the same game and region, chill or competitive, and lets you message them. One search finds up to 8 players, which makes it a fit for your first tribemates, not a full roster. It does not match on rank, role or schedule, so you settle server, map and platform in chat. See the ARK: Survival Ascended page or head to find players.
FAQ
How do I join a tribe in ARK: Survival Ascended?
Find a player or tribe on your server and ask a tribe admin to invite you; the invitation is sent from the interaction menu, face to face in game. If you already own a base, merge into their tribe so you keep your structures and tames.
How many players can be in a tribe in ARK: Survival Ascended?
It depends on the server. On official Conquest servers the limit is 10 or 25 players, depending on the cluster. Unofficial servers set their own limit.
Is ARK: Survival Ascended crossplay?
Steam lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer, and Wildcard's posts say official Conquest servers are open to PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Which platforms a given server accepts can vary, so check before your group commits.
Should I choose PvE or PvP for my first tribe?
PvE if your group wants to tame, build and fight bosses at its own pace. PvP if everyone can cover the base across the day and accepts the risk of raids.
How do I know if a tribe is trustworthy?
Ask for the tribe's rules, start with limited rank and no vault access, and watch whether members are online when they say they will be.
